The California Workers’ Compensation Institute reported that frequency among private self-insureds rose in 2020, driven by a big increase in the incidence of indemnity claims that more than offset a decline in medical-only claim frequency.
CWCI’s analysis of data compiled by the state Office of Self-Insurance Plans found medical-only claims fell 15.1% to 43,779 in 2020 from 51,545 in 2019. At the same time, indemnity claims increased 24.5% to 42,724 from 34,307 over the same period.
