A new report from the National Bureau of Economic Research may fuel the skepticism surrounding workplace wellness programs, even as some in the workers’ comp industry are ramping up investment in the programs.
The NBER study included 4,834 workers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Researchers randomly assigned 3,300 workers to a group that was eligible to participate in the wellness program and 1,534 employees to a group that wasn’t allowed to participate. The eligible group was further divided to offer different levels of cash incentive for participating.
