Miraglia to Retire From WC Commission After 20 Years

Maryland Workers' Compensation Commissioner Cynthia Miraglia, a longtime workers' compensation attorney and commission member, will retire next month, the commission announced.

Miraglia, who this year was elected to the College of Workers' Compensation Lawyers, has been on the Workers' Compensation Commission since 1999. She was chair of the commission's medical fee guide committee and is credited with guiding major revisions to the state's medical reimbursement system.

She is a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law, and in 2009 she received the Rita Davidson Award by the Women's Bar Association of Maryland.

She will step down effective Sept. 1, almost six years before her 12-year term is set to be completed, the commission's bulletin said. The notice did not say when a new commissioner may be named. Under Maryland law, the governor appoints commissioners, who must be at least 30 years old and members of the state bar.

The commission has 10 members, including a chairman, who act as judges in claims disputes.
