Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories now account for more than a third of all drugs dispensed to injured workers in the Golden State, triple the proportion for opioids, according to the California Workers’ Compensation Institute.
CWCI on Wednesday said its latest study also found that while most NSAIDs used in California’s comp system are inexpensive and utilization hasn’t changed significantly since the formulary took effect in 2018, the share of total drug spend on these medications jumped to 23.5% from 14.2% in less than two years, largely as a result of two high-cost drugs.
