The Minnesota Court of Appeals upheld the denial of line-of-duty death benefits for a retired firefighter’s fatal heart attack.
Floyd Jones joined the St. Paul Fire Department in 1992. He was diagnosed with hypertension and prostate cancer in 2013, underwent prostate surgery and retired the following year.
In 2019, a doctor evaluating Jones for disability and workers’ compensation benefits said it was more likely than not that Jones’ risk of developing prostate cancer increased due to his occupational exposure to chemicals and smoke as a firefighter.
