A plan to revamp Alabama’s notoriously low-paying workers’ compensation system and avoid another court ruling on the law’s constitutionality may have pulled up lame before even entering the starting gate this year.
One of the state’s largest insurance groups, which represents self-insurance funds for more than 16,000 businesses, this week came out against proposed legislation drafted by an Alabama Bar Association committee. Some attorneys now say that the unexpected opposition could stop the reform effort in its tracks, at least until next year.
