Recently introduced legislation in Maine would extend to prime contractors liability for occupational injuries suffered by those working for uninsured subcontractors.
LD 1500, introduced Thursday by Sen. President Troy Jackson, D-Aroostook, would require the prime contractor to pay for workers' compensation benefits as if it were the direct employer of an injured worker, unless there is an intermediate subcontractor with workers' compensation coverage that would be required to provide benefits.
The bill also proposed amendments to the Employment Rehabilitation Fund.
