A Chicago hot dog and hamburger bun plant is facing $42,000 in federal fines after the death of one of its workers prompted an Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspection.
The worker, a 31-year-old engineer who had been with Alpha Baking Co. for six years, was attempting to check the oil level on a bakery loader on May 27 when a gear arm unexpectedly moved, catching his head against the machine's frame. The injury was fatal, according to a Thursday press release.
