A former neurosurgeon will serve nearly 20 years in prison for a self-dealing scheme involving spinal implants that started in California and moved to Michigan.
Aria O. Sabit in May 2015 pleaded guilty to four counts of health care fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and one count of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. He was sentenced Tuesday to 235 months in prison for the fraud scheme that federal prosecutors say bilked $2.8 billion out of Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers.
