Doctor, Hospital Owner Await Sentencing for Millions in False Claims

Wednesday, February 27, 2019 | 0

A Houston physician and a hospital owner are awaiting sentencing after a jury found them guilty of sending false claims for medical tests to insurers.

Harcharan Narang, 50, and Dayakar Moparty, 47, were found guilty of health care fraud and money laundering, according to federal prosecutors and news reports. Narang, an internal medicine physician, and Moparty, former owner of Red Oak Hospital, face up to 10 years in prison for each of the 17 fraud counts.

Prosecutors said the two made millions by giving patients medical tests that were unnecessary, and billing for tests that were never done.

A sentencing hearing for Narang and Moparty is set for June 20 before U.S. District Judge Sim Lake. They are permitted to remain out on bond with ankle monitors.
