The number of applications for Social Security Disability benefits and the number of benefit awards have been steadily falling since 2011, in a trend that some see as intertwined with recent developments in workers’ compensation. Applications for Social Security Disability benefits peaked in 2010 at 2.94 million, a year when 1.05 million benefit awards were made, according to Social Security Administration statistics.
