A New York lawmaker is proposing to significantly increase the penalty for employers that retaliate against workers who file comp claims, raising it from a couple of hundred dollars to more than three times the affected worker's annual wages.
New York businesses that fire or refuse to reinstate someone who sought work comp benefits can be penalized between $100 and $500.
Assembly Bill 9009, introduced Wednesday by Assemblymember Clyde Vanel, D-Queens, would require the penalty to be equal to three times the total compensation of the employee subjected to the violation.
