A special fund within Kentucky’s workers’ compensation system has been paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in benefits to deceased workers, including some who have been dead for years, according to a local newspaper report.
The state has been trying to recover the accidental overpayments, including going so far as to prosecute deceased workers’ family members who may have spent the money without knowing the benefits were not theirs to spend, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
