Mississippi has become the latest state to bypass the workers' compensation system altogether in providing cancer coverage for first responders.
After weeks of negotiations, the Legislature on Friday passed Senate Bill 2835, which would create a defined-benefit package similar to cancer-coverage laws adopted in Georgia, New York, Colorado and a handful of other states.
Gov. Phil Bryant is expected to sign the bill that lawmakers passed on the last day of the 2019 session.
