A firefighter for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs pleaded guilty to one count of workers' compensation fraud for working while receiving benefits, according to federal prosecutors in New Jersey.
Richard Hyland, 61, injured his back while working at the VA Medical Center in Lyons in 2014. Each year, he certified that he was not working or volunteering in order to remain eligible for workers' compensation benefits.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for New Jersey said those certifications were false.
