Insurance Company Sues Governor for $166K in Unpaid Comp Deductibles

New York-based Starr Indemnity & Liability Co. filed a lawsuit alleging West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice owes $166,000 on comp policies covering workers at a company he runs with his adult children, according to a report by the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

The lawsuit alleges that policies the Justice Family Group purchased covering June 1, 2018, through June 1, 2020, included a per accident deductible of $1 million, according to the report.

The complaint filed May 4 with the federal court for the Southern District of West Virginia alleged that the Justice Family Group failed and refused to pay deductibles under the policies.

In addition to the governor, the suit lists son James C. Justice III and daughter Jillean L. Justice as company’s members, according to the report.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the lawsuit was filed within a month of four retired miners alleging in court filings that coal companies owned by the Justice family failed to provide prescription drug coverage. That filing came within a month of the federal court in Delaware finding that Justice and two companies his family controls owed $6.8 million for breaching a contract with a Pennsylvania coal supplier.
