After more than a week of unanswered questions, the California Division of Workers' Compensation on Tuesday confirmed that Administrative Director George Parisotto has retired from state service.

Parisotto's last day at the helm of the DWC was Friday, and the position will remain vacant until the governor appoints a replacement, a DWC spokesperson said in the first substantive response to questions about the director's status since Jan. 22.

WorkCompCentral reached out to the DWC on Jan. 22 to confirm or refute reports that Parisotto was leaving at the end of the month, and to inquire about accomplishments under his leadership and succession plans. The agency said in an emailed statement that it could not respond by 5 p.m. Jan. 23 but would circle back Jan. 26.

On Jan. 27, a division spokesperson said he was "still waiting on confirmation and info" and hoped to circle back before the end of the day. On Jan. 28, the spokesperson wrote, "I don't have an answer for you yet. Still working on it."

The DWC did not respond to a Jan. 28 email seeking only to confirm or refute retirement reports and asked the agency to disregard earlier questions about Parisotto's accomplishments and succession plans.

WorkCompCentral again contacted the division on Tuesday after observing that Parisotto's name and photograph had been removed from the DWC executive leadership webpage, which now lists his position as vacant.

The DWC confirmed the departure but declined to comment on its lack of response to prior questions about Parisotto.

His roughly decade-long tenure at the helm of the DWC stands in contrast to the frequent turnover that preceded his appointment. Between 2005 and 2016, the division cycled through four administrative directors, including multiple interim appointments.

Carrie Nevans served in an acting capacity beginning in 2005, followed by Destie Overpeck as interim director in 2011. Rosa Moran was appointed administrative director in July 2011 and resigned in September 2012, after which Overpeck again served as acting director before being formally appointed in April 2015. Overpeck left the agency in February 2016.

Parisotto, who joined the DWC in 1998, was serving as acting chief counsel when he was named acting administrative director following Overpeck’s departure.

Former Gov. Jerry Brown appointed Parisotto as permanent administrative director in October 2017, and Gov. Gavin Newsom reappointed him in September 2022.

The governor’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
