More than two-thirds of the 7,000 energy worker claims that the U.S. Department of Labor reopened from 2012 to 2017 were approved for compensation, according to the federal Government Accountability Office.
The claims were from contract workers with illnesses resulting from exposure to toxins at Department of Energy work sites, the GAO said in a report released to the public on Friday. Claims can be reopened for various reasons, including new information on toxic substances and associated illnesses, or new evidence provided by a claimant.
