A bill that would lower the ownership threshold for corporate officers in California to be exempt from mandatory workers’ compensation coverage bypassed the Appropriations Committee and is eligible for final votes in the Senate.
Senate Bill 189, by Steven Bradford, D-Gardena, would lower to 10% from 15% the percentage of a company that a corporate officer or board member must own to be able to opt out of workers’ compensation coverage. The bill would also allow professionals, such as doctors and lawyers who form corporations, to decline coverage.
