States struck by hurricanes saw claims drop by as much as 10% in the quarter of landfall, but frequency returned to normal within a year in even the most severe storms, according to a research paper released by the National Council on Compensation Insurance.
NCCI measured a 10.2% reduction in claims in Louisiana in the third quarter of 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans and Hurricane Rita skirted the state’s wester border. No other hurricane in recent decades has shown nearly as large an impact.
