Westover Winery in Castro Valley plans to close before the end of the year in the face of a $155,000 fine for its use of volunteers, according to a report by the San Jose Mercury News.
The Department of Industrial Relations said the volunteers at the winery were illegally unpaid laborers. It also cited the company for not having workers’ compensation insurance for the volunteers.
