Close to 1,000 fraud cases were handed off to Massachusetts prosecutors last year, including a handful of workers’ compensation cases that were referred to the state’s Insurance Fraud Bureau, according to the bureau’s annual report released this month.
Generally, the IFB gets most of its referrals from the auto insurance industry. Out of the 3,728 referrals made to the bureau in 2014, fewer than 500 of them were workers’ compensation-related. More than half of those were claimant fraud.
