Nonfatal workplace injuries that caused employees to miss six or more days of work cost U.S. employers nearly $62 billion in 2013, according to the 2016 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index.
The top cause of a disabling injury identified by the index, as ranked by direct costs to employers, was overexertion involving an outside source, accounting for $14.2 billion in direct costs or 25.7% of the total. The category includes injuries related to lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, carrying or throwing objects.
