An insurance carrier in Maryland must give 45 days notice to an employer if it decides to cancel a policy under a new rule adopted by the state's Workers Compensation Commission.
The notice period is extended from 30 days under the amendment to the commission's regulations covering the responsibilities of insurers. The rule, adopted at the Dec. 10 commission meeting, is effective as of Jan. 7, 2016.
HB 358 was enacted earlier this year, ordering the change. All policies are covered by the rule, except in cases of nonpayment of a premium.
