Simplify Medical has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical trials for an artificial cervical disk made of polymers and ceramic that could reduce the need for computed tomography scans.
The disc, according to a Wednesday press release, contains no metal and is therefore "friendly" to magnetic resonance imaging. Research has shown that MRI scans can be distorted when taking images of patients with artificial metal discs implanted.
