Claimants’ attorneys who represent volunteer firefighters are reeling after a New Jersey appellate court decision last week held that their clients can’t receive wage-loss benefits unless they suffer an actual wage loss.
The decision was bad news for Jennifer Kocanowski, a volunteer firefighter with Finderne Fire Engine Co. in Bridgewater Township. She wasn’t working a paid job when she fell and broke her calf bone while responding to a multi-alarm fire in 2015, having stopped work two years earlier to care for her ailing father.
