Researchers Sharpen Focus on Occupational Diseases

As a growing number of states have passed laws establishing a presumption that certain cancers among firefighters are work-related, a group of epidemiologists is looking into developing a list of diseases that are presumed to be occupational. At the same time, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is launching a program to focus on respiratory diseases with occupational causes. NIOSH is accepting public comment through Aug. 1 on what the program should cover, such as particular hazardous exposures or respiratory diseases.
