The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first non-opioid drug to relieve opioid withdrawal symptoms.
The FDA announced on Wednesday that it had granted approval to US WorldMeds LLC for Lucemyra, also known as lofexidine. The drug is intended to facilitate abrupt discontinuation of opioids in adults. It is approved for up to 14 days of treatment.
Opioid withdrawal symptoms may include anxiety, agitation, sleep problems, muscle aches, runny nose, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and drug craving.
