United Healthcare, a provider of Medicare benefit plans, is running a pilot program of a wearable device that continuously monitors blood glucose levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
The pilot program is a partnership with Dexcom Inc., which makes the device. The program was showcased during the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
Dexcom’s technology consists of a sensor, usually worn on the abdomen, that reads glucose levels just beneath the skin. A transmitter sends the data to a smartphone, which displays updated data every five minutes.
