Amended Bill Defines Day Laborers Eligible for Comp Coverage

Maintenance workers, gardeners and landscapers hired on a one-time basis would be covered by California’s workers’ compensation laws under recent amendments to a bill intended to extend coverage to the estimated 40,000 day laborers working in the Golden State. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, D-San Diego, on Thursday added a definition of “day laborer” to AB 206, a bill she introduced last year but agreed to carry over to 2018 in the face of opposition from the insurance industry.
