City Says it Will Handle Shooting Victims' Medical Bills

Tuesday, June 11, 2019 | 0

Survivors of the Virginia Beach municipal center shooting will have all their medical bills paid through workers’ compensation, city officials said.

City spokeswoman Julie Hill told Channel 13 News Now that city employees treated for injuries related to the shooting would have their medical bills paid, “no matter how small.”

“All of the bills from the hospital go directly to our worker's comp people so that the families do not have to see them at all,” Hill said.

The chief financial officer for Sentara Healthcare, which operates hospitals in the area, said the company was working to make sure medical bills weren’t sent to injured workers or their families. He said that could be challenging because most of the doctors are contractors who bill independently.

The news outlet said on Thursday that four survivors of the shooting remained in the hospital.

Twelve people were died after a 15-year city employee opened fire at the municipal center on May 31. He died in a shootout with police.
