Worker Says Mayor's Company Retaliated Against Him for Comp Claim

Wednesday, February 3, 2021 | 0

A worker for a beverage company owned by the mayor of a South Carolina resort city has filed suit, alleging he was fired after he filed a workers' compensation injury claim.

Jonathan Gomez charged that he was injured while working for Better Brands Inc., a beer-distribution firm owned by Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune. After Gomez visited a doctor and filled out paperwork, he said he was quickly terminated in direct retaliation for filing the claim, according to the lawsuit and local news reports.

Bethune and the beer company declined to comment on the lawsuit, the Myrtle Beach newspaper reported.

Gomez is asking for lost wages and punitive damages.
