Justices: All Police Duties Qualify Under Benefits Law

The plain meaning of the words "any act of duty" in Minnesota law governing enhanced disability benefits for police and firefighters includes all tasks and functions of a police officer, the state Supreme Court has ruled. The "any act of duty" clause in Minnesota Statute Section 353.656, subd. 1 includes all tasks, and not just those that involve hazardous situations or heightened risks or that are unique to police work, the justices ruled last week.
