Port Trucking Companies Skipping Amnesty Program Despite Scrutiny

As the battle heats up over how to properly classify truck drivers who shuttle cargo around California’s ports, the state Department of Industrial Relations is offering to waive civil and administrative penalties for companies that voluntarily label workers as employees. So far, none of the more than 500 drayage firms in the state that service ports in Oakland, Los Angeles, Long Beach and Stockton have taken the department up on its offer, according to spokesman Peter Melton.
