Bill Signed to Require Study of Cancer in Fire Truck Mechanics

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday signed Assembly Bill 1400, which will require a study of occupational cancer rates among mechanics who work on fire engines. The bill, by Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Los Angeles, requires the Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation to work with Los Angeles County and relevant unions on the study. The study will examine the risk of exposure to carcinogenic materials and incidence of occupational cancer in mechanics who repair and clean firefighting vehicles.
