A workers’ compensation insurance carrier that covers California jockeys and other horse racing employees is increasing its per-start fee to ensure coverage at the state’s thoroughbred race tracks.
The carrier, Post Time Self Insurance, is increasing the fee from $120 to $149 as of July 1, according to a news release from the Thoroughbred Owners of California.
Nearly two months without revenue-generating live racing and uptick in state workers’ compensation costs were cited as reasons for the funding shortfall, according to the news release.
