The federal work safety agency is looking into giving crane operators an extra year to meet the qualifications set out in a standard adopted in 2010. The standard initially gave employers four years to ensure that their crane operators met one of the following criteria to prove they could competently operate a crane:  Certified by an accredited independent testing organization. Met the standards of an employer's independently audited program. Was authorized and trained to operate cranes by the U.S. military.
