Report: SCIF Files Claim on Behalf of Terrorism Shooting Victim

Wednesday, May 25, 2016 | 5

State Compensation Insurance Fund filed a claim with San Bernardino County for $53,439 on behalf of a man killed in the Dec. 2, 2015, shooting at the Inland Regional Center, the San Bernardino Sun reports.

The claim State Fund filed on Friday demands $43,439 in expenses and $10,000 in damages on behalf of Larry D. Kaufman, who was one of 14 people killed in what the FBI says is the deadliest terrorist attack in the U.S. since 9/11.

David Wert, a county spokesman, told the San Bernardino Sun that the county’s attorneys had not talked to State Fund, and he said the specifics regarding the carrier’s claim were not clear.

Gina Simons, a spokeswoman for State Fund, said she could not discuss specifics of the case.

The claim was reportedly filed on behalf of one of Kauffman’s dependents, according to his boyfriend, Ryan Reyes. However, Reyes didn’t have any more information, the Sun reported.

To date, family members of shooting victims have filed seven claims against the county seeking $262 million in damages. Three relatives of Sierra Clayborn each filed claims with the county demanding $68 million. And the widow of Michael Wetzel filed four claims for a total of $58 million, according to the Sun.

The claims allege wrongful death and negligence.

The county on Feb. 1 rejected all seven claims. The family members have until Aug. 1 to file lawsuits against the county.
