3 Businesses Sued Over Allegedly Unremitted Payroll Taxes

Wednesday, January 31, 2018 | 0

The Louisiana Department of Revenue has sued three businesses that allegedly failed to withhold and remit payroll taxes from their employees’ earnings, the Monroe News Star newspaper reported.

The agency says the companies owe the state more than $242,000 in unremitted taxes from 2013-15, broken down as follows:

  • Elliott Roofing Services, Metairie: $55,227.
  • Antunez Painting, Baton Rouge: $147,065.
  • Extreme Cars & Trucks, Monroe: $40,019.

The state audited these businesses through a new process designed to assess whether companies have been misclassifying their employees as independent contractors or paying them in cash, avoiding payroll taxes in the process. Several other audits are in progress, the News Star reported.

Audits are conducted by an interagency task force called GAME ON (Government Against Misclassified Employees Operational Network), composed of the Louisiana Department of Revenue, the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Office of Unemployment Insurance and Office of Workers’ Compensation.
