So-called “firefighter presumption” laws have swept the nation over the past several decades, with 37 states adopting laws that presume firefighters with cancer developed it from work. Writing the presumption into the law eases firefighters’ access to workers’ compensation benefits by removing the requirement that they prove their cancer is work-linked before collecting payments.
