What must have seemed like a done deal and a long-awaited victory for firefighters is now bogged down in the swampy world of south Florida politics. House Bill 857, the House of Representatives' version of a cancer presumption bill that has sailed through Senate committees with unanimous support, would take cancer care out of the workers' compensation arena altogether. The bill would create a hybrid plan that pays $25,000 in cash, coupled with required group health insurance for stricken firefighters and enhanced retirement benefits.
