Moore: Comp Conferences to Attend in 2023

By James Moore

The 2023 workers' comp conferences are the true return to normal. One of the most common questions I receive is what conferences will I be attending this year.

I wanted to cover the ones that I have on my list this early in the year. I have the “for sure” 2023 workers' comp conferences and the ones that I am still contemplating attending. One of my big concerns involves whether the airlines will get me there.

Video conferences are still a great option. I may cover those in a future article. I am covering only the national 2023 workers' comp conferences, not all the conferences that I will attend in 2023, in date order.

WCRI — March 21-22, Phoenix

This is one of the best “data wonks” conferences in existence. Some people may roll their eyes at more workers' comp statistics. However, some of the groundbreaking and against-the-norm studies have been published by the Workers Comp Research Institute over the years, such as Dr. Savych’s study on what happens to injured workers after the end of their claim and the success of their return to work. Another shocking study result was that chiropractic care may shorten an injured worker’s time out of work. No, really –check out the study here.

At the 2022 National Workers Comp and Disability Conference, I discussed the upcoming Phoenix conference with Dr. John Ruser, president and CEO at WCRI.  Thanks to Andy for providing me with information as I was writing articles on the studies.

NCCI — May 8-10, Orlando, Florida

I have attended many of the National Council on Compensation Insurance data conferences over the past 15 years. Last year was my first for the Annual Insights Symposium. One of the highlights was talking with one of the federal bank vice presidents.

Thanks to Cristine Pike for providing me with great info over the past few years when I was writing about one of the articles or studies. If you have any questions on anything NCCI, I recommend contacting her first.

The 2022 NCCI conference attendees were some of the best contacts I have made at a conference. Make sure you have plenty of coffee when you hear Dr. Bob Hartwell’s presentation. He covers so much ground in a 50-minute session with the best charts.

WCI — Aug. 20-23, Orlando

I attended the 2021 Workers' Compensation Institute conference in December 2021. Check out the article here, including the puppy pictures. I was unable to attend the whole conference, as I had an urgent project to complete for a longstanding agency client.

Bob Wilson, formerly of WorkersCompensation.com, single-handedly pointed out that the conference was worth attending and heavily encouraged attendance since 2017.

NWCDC — Sept. 20-22, Las Vegas

My search for workers' comp technology at the sessions and vendor booths has usually provided me with an exhausting search. Fortunately, I have always found some type of technology, such as Proov Pharmaceuticals, and others. The National Workers' Compensation and Disability Conference has always been my “visit every vendor booth” adventure.

Last year, Denise Algire invited me along to surf every session. The conference sessions were moved nearer the vendor booths to avoid walking to another part of a massive hotel and then back to the booths.
