Carriers Argue Federal Law Prevents Them From Reimbursing Workers for Medical Pot

Attorneys for two workers’ compensation carriers told the Minnesota Supreme Court that their clients cannot be forced to reimburse injured workers for medical marijuana because federal law prohibits them from doing so. Lawyers for Hartford Insurance Group and State Auto/United Fire & Casualty Group said during oral arguments the high court held on two cases Monday that insurers could be prosecuted for aiding and abetting the possession of marijuana, which remains illegal on the federal level despite the fact that 36 states now allow at least some marijuana use among adults.
