California Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday signed into law a bill making cheerleaders employees eligible for workers' compensation benefits, among other things.
AB 202, by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, requires teams classify cheerleaders as employees, provide comp coverage, pay minimum wage and reimburse work-related travel expenses. The bill defines a cheerleader as "anyone who performs acrobatics, dance or gymnastic exercises on a recurring basis."
