A California lawmaker introduced legislation that would enhance first responder death benefits by extending the time that employers are required to provide health benefits for minor dependents by five years.
When firefighters or peace officers are killed as the result of an accident or injury caused by external violence or physical force incurred in the performance of their job, their employers are required to continue providing health benefits to the deceased employee's spouse unless the spouse elects to receive a lump-sum survivor's benefit.
