The chief deputy commissioner of the North Carolina Industrial Commission has died after an 11-year battle with breast cancer.
Melanie Wade Goodwin, 50, served on the commission since 2011. She was a former state representative who, in 2008, became the state's first lawmaker to give birth while in office. She was known as a dedicated public servant, an effective attorney, and a strong advocate for women and families, according to the commission and news reports.
