The California Occupational and Safety Administration is considering adopting emergency standards for a chemical used to manufacture artificial butter flavoring after receiving a petition from several labor groups and a letter signed by several state lawmakers, state officials said Wednesday.
The chemical, diacetyl, is believed to cause a potentially fatal lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans. Approximately 30 plants in California are known to use the chemical, commonly used in the manufacture of butter-flavored popcorn.
