An anti-ulcer medication sometimes prescribed to injured workers has been found to contain low levels of a carcinogen, the Food and Drug Administration announced.
The agency issued an alert on Friday saying that some ranitidine drugs, which include brand-name medication Zantac, contain a contaminant called N-nitrosodimethylamine. The impurity, also known as NDMA, is classified as a probable carcinogen, FDA said.
“The FDA is evaluating whether the low levels of NDMA in ranitidine pose a risk to patients,” the agency said.
