San Francisco to Require Vaccination for City Workers

Friday, June 25, 2021 | 0

The City of San Francisco will require all workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 within 10 weeks of the Food and Drug Administrative giving final approval to a vaccine, according to a report by USA Today.

The move makes San Francisco the first major city to require vaccination for all of its 37,000 employees, according to the report.

The new policy requires city workers to report their vaccination status to the city by July 29 as a condition of employment.

According to the report, the policy is intended to both protect city workers and save taxpayers money.

“Workers’ compensation claims for San Francisco employees who are exposed to the virus at work and cannot work because they are sick with COVID-19 have already cost San Francisco close to $3 million,” said Carol Isen, human resources director for the city and County of San Francisco.

The California Workers’ Compensation Institute reports 1,812 COVID-19 claims have been reported from San Francisco County between January 2020 and May 2021, about 35 claims for every 10,000 employees.

Public safety and government workers accounted for 469 of those claims, followed by health care workers with 356 and food service workers with 160.

CWCI reports 146,454 statewide COVID-19 claims were filed through May.
