Hawaii Gov. David Ige named Leonard Hoshijo the full-time director of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, a position he has held on an acting basis since December.
The governor named Hoshijo acting director of the department that regulates the state’s workers’ compensation, occupational safety and unemployment insurance programs in December when former director Linda Chu Takayama was named interim director of the Department of Taxation. He announced the permanent appointment Wednesday.
Hoshijo joined the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations in 2015 as deputy director. Before entering the public sector, he worked as the education and political director for the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters. Hoshijo also worked for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union as a representative, organizer and international vice president.
The appointment requires Senate confirmation.
